Special Considerations Must Be Taken When Moving Part 1

by Sean Rasmussen on June 19, 2009

first-home2Moving to a new home can be a very exciting time, or it can become a stressful situation. There are so many things that need to be done and taken care of that the sheer magnitude of it can become overwhelming.

Your Move Affects More Than Just You

You move will affect more than just you. This is especially true if you have children or older family members living with you. They may feel resentful of being forced to leave their friends behind, or they may be scared to go to a new place and have to start a new school and make new friends. Older family members may feel a sense of loss at leaving a home or area where they have lived for many years. Moving is not only a physical change but an emotional change as well. This is especially true if you are moving to another city, or even another state. But there are things that can be done to make the move easier for everyone involved.

Details Will Help Make The Move Easier

If children or other family members will be effected by your move one of the best things that you can do to make the move as easy as possible is to explain everything to them in great detail.

  • Tell your children what the house and property will look and what the neighborhood or area has to offer.
  • Explain to your children why you are moving and tell them about the area where you are going.
  • Help your children to understand that they are still important and that they can help you with the move too.

In the next installment we will continue to talk about how your move may affect your children and how to make the move as easy as possible for everyone involved.

Hi Sean,

Again, this is great advice. I think, if it’s at all possible, take your children to visit their new neighbourhood and show them the parks and schools, etc. Anything that will help make it seem familiar and not so scary.

Jazz has some good points there. Taking a family day out to the parks etc in the new area will make the kids feel more relaxed about moving to the new home. They may even befriend some of the local kids, giving them something to look forward too.
