Prioritize What You Want Before You Buy Part 7

So far we have looked at a lot of different things to prioritize before you start looking at a properties. It is important to know what you want before you go so that you can narrow down your choices and make your house hunting faster and more satisfying.

How Much Privacy Do You Want?

It is important to know how much privacy you want in your new home. Are you comfortable living in a close area with houses on each side of you as well as behind you? Or would you rather have some space between your home and the neighbors? Perhaps you would rather live in a house where you can not see any other houses anywhere near you. Knowing how much privacy and space you want in a property is very important. You might find the house of your dreams in an old historic neighborhood, but if you don’t want to have close neighbors you will not be happy with the house, even though it is beautiful.

Decide What Is A Necessity And What Is A Luxury

One thing that you will need to do when making your list of property options is determine what is an absolute necessity and what is just a preference. Perhaps you absolutely want to live in a cute suburb with a close proximity to shopping and restaurants and you would prefer to have a nice garden area. Determine which one is more important. Ideally it would be great to find a home that has both, but knowing which one is more important, and what you can live without will help you narrow down your choices and make a decision that you are happy with. Basically you are deciding what you have to have and what you can do without.

  1. Hi Sean,

You make an excellent point here. You have to decide what’s an essential element that you need in your home and what’s a luxury. Hopefully, you’ll have a short list of luxury items that you just can’t live without.

Either way though, you have to find a property that you’re happy with because if it’s the family home, you’re going to be there a while.

Planning for the future when you are house hunting is a good idea too. If you have more kids will you be able to extend. Will the council allow you to build a second storey etc. I guess just having a clear idea of what you are looking for in your dream property is the key.
