Prioritize What You Want Before You Buy Part 1

When you begin looking for a new property it is important to make sure that you know exactly what you want. There are many factors to consider and the task of finding that perfect property can seem overwhelming at times. One of the most important things that you need to do before you start looking at homes and going to open houses is to sit down and make a list of exactly what you want in a home.

The Size Matters

The size of your new home can be a very important feature to consider. So how can you determine how much space that you need? Here are a few things to consider:

  • How many people will be living in the house? If you will only have one or two people in your home than you should be able to make do with a smaller house than a family of five.
  • Do you have any pets? Depending on what type of pets you have you may need to factor in extra room to accommodate them. If, for example, you have two Great Danes, you will need more room than some one who only has one house cat and a Pomeranian.
  • Do you work from home? If you work out of a home office than you will need to make sure that your new home has ample room for you to have some office space away from the distractions of everyday life so that you can focus on your work.
  • Do you have a lot of stuff? If you have accumulated a large quantity of furniture or have lots of family heirlooms in your possession than you will need to make sure that your new home has enough square footage to hold all of your things.

Understanding how much room you need in your new home is an important first step in knowing what size house to look for.

  1. Hi Sean,

Size does matter. You need to know how much room you need and how much you’d like. You can buy a bigger house but it’ll cost you more. So you need to know how much room you really need so you’re not paying more than you have to.

Working out what you want is definely a good idea so you don’t waste your time looking at properties that are never going to be suitable for you. It also gives your real estate agent a clear idea of properties to find for you. If you don’t know what you want then write down what you don’t want and work from there.
